A47 Thickthorn Junction (£200m) – Project Technical Lead & Design Management Lead. Delivered free flow slip roads, bridges, and drainage systems to alleviate congestion. Oversaw design assurance and integration of multidisciplinary teams

 

Project Technical Lead: Carried out Hybrid role as Project Technical Lead and Design Management Lead for National Highways Regional Delivery Partnership scheme - A47 Thickthorn Junction. The project will help relieve congestion at the Thickthorn junction by providing two new free-flowing slip roads that will connect A47 with A11. Main works include constructing a free flow link from A11 to A47, A new road crossing A11, earthworks, drainage, Road over Bridges, Footbridge, Culverts, Pumping Station, Attenuation Tank and landscaping works.

A46 Newark Bypass £400million

A46 Newark Bypass (£400m) – Design Management Lead & Principal Designer Representative. Led design from DCO to detailed design stage, ensuring compliance with governance and stakeholder requirements.

Euston Station HS2 Works £350million 

Euston Station HS2 Works (£350m) – Lead Design Manager & Contractor Engineering Manager. Delivered major modifications to Euston Station to maintain safe operations during HS2 construction and reconfigured critical power infrastructure.

Lead Design Manager and Contractor Engineering Manager: for Euston Station and 11KV Programme. Works include several major modifications to Euston station to enable construction of new High Speed 2 London Terminal. Main works include 

  • Remodelling of Euston Station to ensure Station remains operational and safe during HS2 works on western side of the station. 
  • Reconfiguration of existing 11KV domestic ring main power distribution system away from HS2 site

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Direction and Leadership to the design teams to deliver on programme, budget, and scope.
  • Appointed as Contractor Engineering Manager to ensure compliance to Network Rail design and construction assurance.
  • Ensured CDM compliance
  • Management of hand back deliverables including Redline and As-built models and drawings. 
  • Management of external consultants including specialist sub-contractors for the delivery of design.
  • Monitored the overall functioning of Design Delivery across the Programme and report to the Project Leadership team.
  • Management of temporary works and ensured the temporary works are aligned with design and construction programme.
  • Established and Monitored Design Management Processes including Document Control Processes. 
  • Management of multidiscipline interfaces including integration of design and construction.
  • Change control management. Ensured that appropriate commercial and change control processes are in place.
  • Developed Engineering Assurance processes

Wessex Capacity Programme £455million 

Delivered major capacity improvements at London Waterloo Station under GRIP 3–8 through a multi-partner alliance (Network Rail, Skanska, Colas, Mott MacDonald, Aecom). Key outputs included:

  • Reopening Waterloo International Terminal to enable 20 trains per hour.
  • Extension of platforms 1–4 for 10-car trains.
  • Structural modifications: under-bridge remodelling, viaduct strengthening, new lifts, escalators, and station roof works.
  • Development of retail scheme for Waterloo International Terminal.

M42 Junction 6 £282 million

M42 Junction 6 (near Solihull- Birmingham) aims to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance access to Birmingham Airport, NEC, and the future HS2 station. Managed by National Highways with contractor Skanska, main construction began in 2021 to add a new 2.4km dual carriageway link road, a new Junction 5A, and improve local routes

Design and Construction of Bridges

Worked as Designated Project Engineer and Project Engineer Civils on bridge construction and strengthening projects. Responsible for Design Management, design checking and reviews to ensure design is developed to NR standards. Ensured implementation of CDM, ROGS, CSM, Network Rail and RSSB Standards. 

Portsmouth Harbour Pier Under-bridge WPH2/17A/22: Project Engineer Civils for GRIP 3-8 Strengthening (to RA8) and scour protection works to a 19 span (240m long) wrought iron and cast iron bridge carrying a four track railway line on the Portsmouth south sea line. Detailed design and construction cost was £8.9 million. 

Swing Swang Lane Bridge BKE/31/36: DPE and Project Engineer Civils for the Design and construction GRIP 3-8 of a new in-situ reinforced concrete U-frame substructure. The structure was a single span pre-cast concrete skew bridge.

Aldershot Under-Bridge: GRIP 3-8. Construction of a new steel U-deck bridge on new cill units. A multi-discipline project with Civil and Track works. The project was £1.5million design and build by Osborne under MFF contract.

 

Railway Station Development Projects

Designated Project Engineer and Project Engineer Civils for design and construction of Railway Stations. Responsible for Design Management, design checking and reviews to ensure design is developed to NR standards. Railway station developments at Cranbrook, New Malden, Godalming and Wimbledon Stations.

Earthwork Works/Embankment Stabilisation

Designated Project Engineer on several earthwork projects, includes Network Rail Control Period 5 earthworks, e.g. Ashe Arch embankment and Firwood embankment, Honiton Earthwork stabilization works and Abbey Road Cutting Stabilization works.

Scour Protection Works

Designated Project Engineer on several scour protection projects including Control Period 5 works, River Avon Scour Protection works, and Poole Harbor Sea Wall defence works.

Managed structural assessment and strengthening of portfolio of circa 1500 Network Rail bridges on Kent Rout. It included railway wrought iron, steel plate-girder, truss, concrete and masonry arch bridges including highway bridges. Developed strengthening and maintenance schemes and reviewed proposals from external organizations/consultants.

Structural Assessment of Bridges

  • Appointed Structures Manager for the Assessment of circa 1500 bridges on Kent Route to fulfill the requirement of the Office of Rail Regulator. This included Level 1 Assessments under Civil Engineering Frame Work Contract (circa £250K) and Level 0 Assessments (circa £400K).
  • Managed team of structural engineers to carryout reviews and assessment checks. 
  • Carried out in-house structural assessments including grillage analysis and technical approvals of structural assessment 
  • Assessed Highway bridges for movement of abnormal loads according to Highway Agency standard BD86.
  • Carried out grillage analysis of bridges on SuperSTRESS and prepared technical assessment reports

 

 

Thames-link Project

Checked and reviewed structural assessments and strengthening of Network Rail metallic and brick arch bridges for the £3.5 billion Thames-link programme

Charing Cross Platform Extension Project

Review of structural assessment for the platform extension on the Charing Cross / Hungerford Bridge for 12 car trains. Carried out corrosion survey and prepared report for London Charing Cross station platforms. 

Management of Under-Strength Bridges

Managed safe operation of under-strength bridges for Network Rail. Prepared network changes in consultation with stakeholders, i.e. Train Operating Companies & Freight Operating Companies. Involved in repair and maintenance works. Prioritised bridges for strengthening for Kent Route control period 5 (year 2014-19) capital development programme.

Bridge Inspection and Monitoring

Carried out inspection of Network Rail bridges on Kent route to mitigate risks of under-strength or poor condition elements. Performed on-site inspection quality checks on consultant’s reports. Prepared monitoring and targeted examination schemes. 

Bridge Strike Management and on-call Engineer

Examined bridges for bridge strike damage. Reviewed bridge strike assessments and carried out peer reviews for dispensations according to Network Rail code NR/GN/CIV/202. On-call engineer for Kent and Anglia Routes.
